Family – run Lakeview Market serves up rich history and good eats
Lakeview Market has been a part of Kelowna since the 1940’s, and to this day it has held on to its old-fashioned values. They are one of the only independently owned grocery stores around that still has their own in-house butcher and meat department, as well as an incredible scratch-made bakery that makes everything from pies to pizza dough. Their “no shortcut” philosophy means that everything they make is top quality, delicious and also affordable; it might just be your new favourite place to shop.
Bill and Barb Jones bought the store in ’68, and their family still runs it today. They have a number of core staff that have worked there for over 20 years, and in multiple generations. You can find Tracey, who works in the Bakery department with both her mother and her daughter, and Bill and Barb’s granddaughter, also named Barb, works at Lakeview too. Everything has come full circle, and the whole place runs on family values and traditions.
Looking for local? Lakeview has one of the best all-around selections in town. With Okanagan brands like Little Creek, Aussie Meat Pies, Fresh is Best, Queen B Popcorn, and Wrap it Up Tortillas, they always represent what’s locally made and delicious. On top of that, their produce selection is filled with as much local produce as possible: you can always find local apples and pears stocked up, and when more fruits and veggies come into season, almost their entire produce department will be either from the Okanagan or B.C. And you can’t beat their prices either. They even have a “half price produce” rack, where you can find the “imperfect” (but still good) fruits and veggies. It gives you a great deal, and helps them cut down on waste! Anything else that they can’t sell for whatever reason, they give to local farmers as feed for their goats.
Having their own true meat department with real butchers means that they’re able to use “the whole animal” too. You can request cuts of meat you might not be able to find anywhere else, they can grind their own extra lean ground beef, and you can even ask them to chop up a piece of meat for you (so you have your stir-fry or stew meat ready to go!). They make the BEST thick-cut bacon, and they make their own fresh sausages which you have to try – they start at only $2.99 for a package!
Keep your eye out for their Apple Fritters, too – those are Barb’s favourite (although they sell out fast, so best to get there early!). I’m a huge fan of their ready-made pizza dough, which goes for $1.59 (yep, $1.59, no typo) and makes for an awesome family dinner. Easy, homemade and you definitely won’t find any preservatives here! A few other great store-made items include their ready-made sandwiches, the muffins (95 cents a piece) and pies ($4.99 a pie). I recommend the ginger muffin and the pumpkin pie – they’re both unbeatable. And, of course, their homemade bread is as fresh as can be and comes in every variety you could possibly want.
